The great Tumbled Blue Flagstone Walkway Project officially got underway this afternoon, after my birdbath posting. I'd marked the edges of the walkway with landscaping paint earlier. At approximately 4:00 this afternoon, ground was broken.
CLANK! A rock. Shift shovel over a couple of inches and try again. CLANK! Repeat process, with occasional penetration into the soil.
Two and a half sweaty hours later, it's getting dark, so it's time to call it quits for the day. I did have some assistance from a guy I know from Base (a Navy chief who lives one street over - he was driving by and saw me slaving away). He took up my shovel and excavated thesoil rocks from the end of the walkway immediately adjacent to the driveway. His arrival proved to be very fortuitous, since I'm reasonably certain that the digging in this specific area probably would have taken me A LONG TIME. He did it in minutes, AND helped put the stuff into my rolling cart.
Total work accomplished for the day?
1. Birdbath out of car and set up in backyard, with water
2. Approximately 5 linear feet (at 2.5 feet wide and 2-3 inches deep) excavated for the walkway. Only about another 55 feet left to go.
Sigh.
