Run like hell...
Sep. 3rd, 2006 10:21 amErnesto blew into town Friday morning and despite the "stay-at-home" advice that the weather folks were giving, I headed on out to get my hair cut and do some errands. One of these errands was to stop at the VA Runner store.
(Back-tracking a bit...)
My area of VA is growing rapidly in terms of housing developments and commercial areas. One of the new commercial areas has a huge MallWart, Lowe's, and several restaurants. One place that's currently under construction is an American Family Fitness Center.
I've belonged to a couple of the YMCAs down here. They're good places, but my major beef with them was that I got a membership primarily to have an indoor pool to use. Unfortunately, every time I would want to swim laps (typically after work, on my way home), some high school swim team would be having practice or a meet, therefore using the entire pool. I gave up on the Y because of this.
I stopped by the info trailer for the AFF this past week, just to get some info about the place. First, it's going to be open 24/7. Second, membership fees cover everything except for personalized services (such as massages, tanning, personal trainers, and swim lessons). Third, the cardio machines are first come, first served, with no time limits. Fourth - and most importantly - there's a dedicated lap pool that will not be monopolized by swim teams.
So I signed up - got 75% off the enrollment fee and locked in my monthly membership charge for life. Now I just have to wait until this winter (February timeframe) for it to open.
I also need to start getting busy, physically. The dance class, while fun, is only once per week and not nearly enough. I have (in my opinion) a realistic goal to lose 20-25 pounds. This is where my trip to the VA Runner store comes in. I'd heard from friends that the store's staff is incredibly knowledgable about running in general and their products, and that they would even evaluate your running style, heel strike/footfall and gait to determine the best type of shoe for you. So off I went, through the rain and wind, to get a good pair of running shoes.
Approximately 25 minutes and $130 later, I had the below in hand:

The shoes are Reebok's new "Trinity" shoe. Brand-spanking new release. In fact, they're so new, the store staff want me to let them know how I like them. Also got the water bottle with belt holster. May as well do this right.
Broke in the new shoes and water bottle this morning. Ran/walked in cool, somewhat misty weather for about 2 miles - not bad for the first time out in many moons.
Now I just need to keep up with it.
