Thanks to a major BRAC action (with associated Environmental Impact Statement), there will be an obscenely large office/command compound built in the general vicinity of the building I work in over the next year or so. Tree clearing is currently underway as I type this.

One of the few things that has made this job somewhat bearable over the past few years is its location - we're located away from the main part of the base, surrounded by trees and sky and critters and less heavy traffic.

That is all going away right this very second.

When I first started working here, my desk faced out the windows into the back "yard" - a large, open grassy field with a created pond towards the back. On my second day on the job, I watched a red-shouldered hawk hunting for worms in the grass. I've seen otters and beavers in the pond, and little painted turtles sunning themselves on fallen logs. I've watched deer and fox and coyotes (really!) and groundhogs and eastern bluebirds and goldfinches and hummingbirds and blacksnakes and wild turkeys and all sorts of creatures that make you smile and gaze in wonder and appreciation for being able to work in such a neat location, even if the work itself kind of sucks. Even just yesterday I saw a bald eagle flying overhead.

Soon those pretty woods and pond will be ugly brickwork and parking spaces.

My coworkers don't even like looking out their windows now. One even has her blinds closed so she doesn't have to see it. It's really depressing, and it's just one more thing that will make it a lot easier to leave here when another job opportunity crosses my path...

and I feel like I've put in a whole day's work already.

* uploaded a bunch of scanned documents to our online database
* shifted around 3 drawers worth of files to make room for FY09 stuff
* updated a project index list to reflect the drawer shift
* updated another tracking spreadsheet
* had my year-end review with the boss (Went well! Yay!)

Only 6 more hours to go!

Dance class was good last night. I wound up being the only one there, due to one classmate having family stuff to attend to, and the other having contact lens issues. Since it essentially was a private lesson, I got to decide what I wanted to work on. Naturally, I chose the sword dance, which we haven't worked on since around February or March.

I learned a whole new step last night! It's officially called the "reverse point", but it's also not-so-affectionately called the "dizzy step". It's really cool to watch, and it's actually not that hard to do - it just takes a heck of a lot of control, as there are several position changes and what seem like changes in tempo. When done correctly, it looks like you're almost floating over the swords. Yeah, it'll be a while before I get to that point.

I started going through my Population Ecology class materials last night, and managed to get through the first chapter. I was VERY pleasantly surprised at how easily so much of it came back to me - especially the equations. I think it helped that I made so many notes on the class hand-outs.

Hope you all are having a great day!

I've submitted my intent to graduate in January. Masters Degree, here I come.

Now I need to finish the draft of my project and turn it in for review, set the dates for my comps, and start studying my happy arse off.

Updatage: the Pixie was dropped off this morning to get her hiney fixed, and I have a rental for the next day or two. Can't recall the model, but it's a Chevy. Looks kind of like a PT Cruiser, but not as cool looking. It's kind of fugly, actually. But it runs, and that's all I really care about.

Boss has approved my taking Wednesday through Friday off this week. Please join me in a sigh of relief. *Whew!* Now I feel like I have enough time to finish cleaning the spaces that Dad and stepmom will see, AND work on the Masters project (henceforth to be known as "MP").

That's about it. How's YOUR day going?
lothiriel_1: (take cover)
Stayed home today, since I felt lousy all day yesterday. Slept late this morning, and took a 3 hour nap at mid-day. Feeling much better now, and will head back to Hell tomorrow.

Okay, let's get the not-so-great part over with first.

I got rear-ended on Friday afternoon. I'd gone to the gym around mid-day. I was due at the store at 4:00, so I finished with enough time to shower and get something to eat before work. I'm stopped at a red light on route 1 north, when movement makes me check out the rear-view mirror. The car behind me is pretty close and getting closer. Driver doesn't seem to notice that traffic in front of her is actually not moving.

Damage to the Pixie is pretty minimal, to my eyes at least. The rear bumper has two punctures (from the bolts holding her front license plate), with "drag" marks. I'm filing through her insurance so that I don't have to fork out money I can't spare for the deductible. Adjusters for both my and her insurance companies are coming to my work tomorrow to check the damage. Wheee. Just what I fucking needed. I'm fine physically, BTW - she wasn't going fast and I wasn't hit very hard at all. I'm just more pissed off and exasperated than anything else.

On a lighter note, I'm swimming again. The gym is having a swimming challenge during the month of August. The challenge is to swim the pool equivalent of the distance between a couple of local landmarks (about 15 miles). I've already done 3 miles (between Friday and Saturday). I was a bit sore on Saturday from the exertion the previous day - it actually took about 7-8 laps before I really loosened up. I still have decent form, and once I hit my stride, I can keep going, thanks to good endurance built up from other cardio exercise. Go me!

Other than that, not much else to report. Store is fine, base job is okay - no major drama at either location right now.

We currently have a medevac helicopter on the ground in back of our building. Apparently a bicyclist got hit by a car and needs faster transport than an ambulance (either that or traffic is bad).

On top of that, a thunderstorm just rolled in. And it's pouring. This should get interesting.

Busy busy busy...

yardwork )

Yesterday afternoon's level of activity has continued into today here at work.
work work work )

ZOMG, only FIFTEEN days and a wake-up left to Scotland!!! )

Basically, I'm ready. I have a few things to do before I leave, like some house-cleaning, mail and paper holds, writing checks for the petsitter, and arranging for grass-cutting whilst I'm gone. I need to make sure that all my electronic equipment/computer stuff is turned off AND unplugged. And a few other little tasks.

Almost time, almost time...

Busy, busy, busy...

New-sy, but kind of boring )

I guess that's it for now. Time for another cup of coffee. At least I get to leave early today for a dentist appointment - I have a feeling I'm going to be in bed by 8:00 tonight...
lothiriel_1: (going nuts)
Between having Friday the 21st through Tuesday the 25th off, work for 3 days, off for two, work for one (today), off for another, work for two more, then have my regular Friday off (in addition to the weekend), I'm not completely sure if I'm coming or going.

Yes, of course I love having the time off - who wouldn't? I just think I would have preferred the time off all in one chunk, instead of broken up like this. It just feels weird.

And I get to look forward to another 4 day weekend in January (MLK Day, with my regular Friday off) and in February (President's Day, with my regular Friday - my birthday! - off).
lothiriel_1: (yawn)

I'm back from Stones (Okay, that's been over for what, 3 weeks now?) AND I'm back from Massachusetts as of 1830 last night. And yes, I'm back at work this morning. Oy...

Full report (with pictures, once I get them loaded onto my computer) later.
lothiriel_1: (yawn)
Please note the time stamp on this entry.

Yeah. It's early.

Why so early? Because ol' Heather forgot to call the Base when she got up this morning to check the open/delayed opening/closed status (it snowed a bit yesterday). I'm all ready to head out the door to warm up the car and start scraping. That's when I thought it would be a good idea to call.

Base doesn't open until 1000. Dammit.

Guess I'll crash on the sofa for a while longer.
