When it's a mile done in a swimming pool.

Yes, really. A swimming pool mile is considered to be 1650 yards (32 laps). A REAL mile is 1760 yards (35 laps). Why the difference? Your guess is as good as mine.

Why am I bringing it up? Because the chick who's keeping track of the record book for the 15 mile Rappahanock Challenge swim I've been doing at the gym this month is using the 1760 yard mile. This wouldn't be a problem if this tidbit of information was actually SHARED with people. But no - every staff person at the front desk will tell you, when asked, that a mile in the gym's 25 yard pool is 32 laps (a lap being "round trip"). Thanks for the consistancy, folks.

So anyway. On Wednesday afternoon I swam 70 laps. Today I swam 75 (I am so tired...). By my calculations, I am DONE with the Challenge (with 15.11 miles). Or 16.12, if you go by the swimming standard mile.

Been there, swum that - I should be getting my t-shirt any time now...

I spent 14 hours on Saturday sitting on my arse, scrapbooking.

Seriously!

The local alumni chapter of a sorority hosts an annual charity scrapbooking crop (proceeds going to St. Jude's), and this year was no exception. The difference from previous years was that this time, the event was publicized widely, and it was held in the vacant space next to the store. I'd signed up and paid early on, and by last Friday morning, I had all the photos I wanted to work on printed, and all my supplies packed and ready to go.

It was a great event! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were provided (local businesses donated all the food - we even had coffee and goodies from Starbucks), there was a silent auction, a raffle, and lots of door prizes. I didn't win a bloody thing. :)

I did, however, get all of the photos I brought with me cropped and attached to their respective pages, and some of the journalling done. Color me pretty freaking proud of myself. I have another big crop to go to next month - guess I'd better get cracking on printing more photos.

Swimming total - 10 miles. Only 5 left to go. I may be able to get them all done by Friday. I need to be done by next Monday afternoon, since I have a dentist appointment next Wednesday, and I drive north the morning after.

I sent an e-mail to Eric F. (4QF) yesterday, letting him know that I'll play Memory Keeper/Photographer again this year, so it looks like I've made a "what's my SR08 job this year" decision. We've actually had someone on the 4QF forum (I have no idea who) step up to be the Warriors' Tribe team leader, so that's another thing I don't need to worry about. I still haven't decided whether I'll take a watch or not - if I do, it's going to be either one of the first, or one of the last.

Other than that, I plan to just float around at will.

Stayed home today, since I felt lousy all day yesterday. Slept late this morning, and took a 3 hour nap at mid-day. Feeling much better now, and will head back to Hell tomorrow.


Okay, let's get the not-so-great part over with first.

I got rear-ended on Friday afternoon. I'd gone to the gym around mid-day. I was due at the store at 4:00, so I finished with enough time to shower and get something to eat before work. I'm stopped at a red light on route 1 north, when movement makes me check out the rear-view mirror. The car behind me is pretty close and getting closer. Driver doesn't seem to notice that traffic in front of her is actually not moving.

THUNK!!!

*sigh*

Damage to the Pixie is pretty minimal, to my eyes at least. The rear bumper has two punctures (from the bolts holding her front license plate), with "drag" marks. I'm filing through her insurance so that I don't have to fork out money I can't spare for the deductible. Adjusters for both my and her insurance companies are coming to my work tomorrow to check the damage. Wheee. Just what I fucking needed. I'm fine physically, BTW - she wasn't going fast and I wasn't hit very hard at all. I'm just more pissed off and exasperated than anything else.


On a lighter note, I'm swimming again. The gym is having a swimming challenge during the month of August. The challenge is to swim the pool equivalent of the distance between a couple of local landmarks (about 15 miles). I've already done 3 miles (between Friday and Saturday). I was a bit sore on Saturday from the exertion the previous day - it actually took about 7-8 laps before I really loosened up. I still have decent form, and once I hit my stride, I can keep going, thanks to good endurance built up from other cardio exercise. Go me!

Other than that, not much else to report. Store is fine, base job is okay - no major drama at either location right now.

The new American Family Fitness Center that was being built this past fall/winter opened on Monday to much fanfare and large crowds. When I heard last fall that it was being built, I stopped in at the info trailer to find out about it and ask questions. I wound up signing up on the spot.

Okay, so me and this swimming/water/aquatics thing...

Then I joined the Navy.

Hawaii - the outdoor swimmer's paradise )

Then I transferred to Virginia, where winter outdoor swimming just doesn't happen. Unless you're insane.

Swimming as stress relief. )

Fast-forward to the present. I went to the new fitness center after dance class on Monday night, and took a "Fin-Fit" aquatics class. Basically, you do various exercises while wearing fins, which force your lower back, abdominal, and leg muscles to work harder. It was really fun, I like the instructor, and I plan on making this a regular Monday night activity. I went again yesterday after work, and walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes and then did about 12 laps in the pool.

It feels good to be back.
